About the Greensboro HIVE

History. Information. Vision. Exchange.

A diverse mix of people from across Greensboro, North Carolina came together in the fall of 2006 to organize a place where different communities could learn from one another, share stories and information, and exchange resources and ideas. A community space, infoshop, gathering place, and platform for democratic community building.

Striving to recognize and include many voices, The HIVE has been built on open, democratic, consensus-based decision making. We are committed to growing and changing in order to meet the needs of those accessing it. Everyone interested in developing and deepening grassroots community power in Greensboro is welcome and encouraged to get involved!.

The project has taken on different forms in the past year, but has finally found a home on Grove Street in the historic Glenwood neighborhood.

The HIVE Vision Statement

The HIVE is a community center established to foster relationship building, dialog, and resource sharing among individuals, groups, and communities working to build grassroots democracy and community power in and around Greensboro, North Carolina.

The HIVE believes that all people and communities have a right to dignity, safety, health, sustainability, and self-determination. Therefore, we are striving to help:

  • Develop and strengthen community based participatory democracy;
  • Actively confront and challenge all forms of oppression;
  • Celebrate the diversity among us and recognize that we have a lot to learn from each other;
  • Foster education and dialogue that emphasizes self-empowerment and recognizes the real-world needs of individuals and communities;
  • Provide a venue for cultural and artistic expression;
  • Build healthy, ecologically sustainable communities;
  • Support an economy based on localism, fairness, and mutual aid.

Though self-reflection and accountability, we are committed to growing and changing this community center to meet the needs of those who access it. Decision-making is done through a cooperative process where each voice is heard, respected, and incorporated into the outcome. All people and communities working towards progressive social change are welcome and encouraged to get involved.

Organizing Committee

The Organizing Committee meets once a week to oversee the day-to-day operations of the space. These meetings are open to anyone interested in getting involved, but follow an agenda and are business-oriented. Organizing Committee meetings are currently held every Sunday from 4pm-5:30pm.
